B/W portraits, Engravings, Prints and Woodcuts

Though we all think of the beautiful oil paintings, a simple way for the queen’s subjects to see their monarch was via cheap commercial engravings, prints and woodcuts. These were produced individually or within books. The Marian government needed this ‘popular consumption’ to ensure her rule and memory would be remembered. Whether this was viewed in a positive or negative light fell very much to the individual printing press and the patron.

This gallery is a collection of b/w portraits and the many engravings created.
